Milwaukee (MKE) Airport Guide
What's to like
Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport is of the smaller variety, which translates to shorter lines, easier navigation, more efficient security, and substantially more effective luggage drop off and pick up. The atmosphere lacks the bustle and confusion that are typically associated with airports, and this tone is reflected by its helpful staff. Among the institutions that you'd expect to find: bookstores, restaurants, and souvenir shops, there are also plentiful charging stations and baby care facilities. Military personnel and families will especially enjoy MKE, as they receive preferential treatment on flights and security.
Â
Downsides
As a small airport, the restaurant variety is standard with few options for people with particular or health-conscious diets. The wifi, which can be sometimes difficult to connect to, is only provided free of charge for a limited period of time. You also can't move between concourses once you've passed security, leaving you with only the food and entertainment options that are available where you are. If you have to wait for any significant amount of time for your flight, the experience can quickly become tedious. There are also no luggage storage or lockers available.
Â
Points of Interest
General Mitchell International Airport sports two standout features: the Gallery of Flight Aviation History Museum and its ping pong tables. The original airfield was constructed in 1920, and the in-airport museum celebrates the aviation pioneers of Milwaukee and Wisconsin with some interesting displays of memorabilia and cultural artifacts. It's an experience rarely found in an airport that is highly recommended. Equally unique to MKE is its ping pong tables, which offer a nice diversion from waiting for your flight. Since the airport isn't too big or busy, most people ought to be able to get a game or two in before settling into a plane.
Â
Tidbits
Given its age and military associations, MKE has been relevant throughout history, having once even served as a prisoner of war camp during the Second World War. The airport continues to honor its military background with a free USO lounge for military and their families. The Renaissance Books branch within the airport is largely presumed to be the very first used bookstore ever housed in one anywhere in the world.
