Airport Information

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is and airport used by both the military and civilian airplanes.  It is also the largest and busiest airport in the five state upper Midwest region which includes Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wisconsin.

The airport is built on the former Twin City Speedway racetrack which went bankrupt in the early 1900s. The speedway had been an unsuccessful venture was sold to make way for the new airport, Speedway Field.  Shortly thereafter it was renamed Wold-Chamberlain Field for the World War I pilots Ernest Groves Wold and Cyrus Foss Chamberlain.During his first round the world flight 1938, Howard Hughes briefly stopped at the airport.

Later renamed to Minneapolis-St. Paul InternationalAirport/Wold-Chamberlain Field in 1944, the airport has dropped the Wold/Chamberlain portion of the name in recent years.  MSP has two terminals that were both named after Minnesotans.  The Lindberg Terminal, named after Charles Lindbergh and the smaller Humphrey Terminal, named after US VP Hubert Humphrey serve the MSP travelers. The Lindbergh Terminal has seven concourses lettered from A – G. The Humphrey Terminal is labeled as Concourse H.

The Minneapolis – St. Paul International Airport connects also not only with cars, but with the city and shuttle buses, taxis, light rail, and car rental services.  There are two trams at the airport. One carries passengers from the main sectional Lindberg Terminal to the Hub Building and the other runs along the Concourse C. The rail system not only connects the two terminals, but also connects the airport to the Mall of America and downtown Minneapolis.

The main Charles Lindbergh Terminal Building handles all the international flights and airlines.  The Hubert H. Humphrey Terminal is used mostly for charter airlines and low-cost carriers.

On a side note, the movie AIRPORT was partially filmed here.

MSP is also home to the Minneapolis – St. Paul International Airport Joint Air Reserve station which supports both the Air Force Reserve Command and the Air National Guard flight operations.  It is the third-largest hub for Delta Air Lines and Delta Connection partners. This accounts for more than 80% of the airport's passenger travel.
