City Information

Albany was originally founded as Fort Orange along the Hudson River, which was named for the Explorer Henry Hudson. By 1629 the Dutch West India Company had established a trading post here.  In 1664 the Dutch surrendered to the British and the village of Beverwyck, which it was now known, remained under British control until the American Revolution.

Those on July 22, 1686 that Gov. Thomas Dongan granted a charter that recognize Albany as a city.  Peter Schuyler was appointed as the first mayor of Albany.  Known as a trading center, many Europeans settled in the area.  Even after the fur trade died down, the area relied strongly on raw materials as their main source of income.

During the Revolutionary War, Albany was a useful supply point as well's focal point for military planning due to its location along the Hudson River.  After several years in formulating a state government after the war, Albany was decided to be the state capital.  Prior to the Civil War, the city was active with abolitionists.  Leading this movement was Stephen Meyer, who was an African-American.  He was a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad  for the Albany "stop."

Albany has always been proud of its history and cultural heritage.  Albany has dozens of examples of historic buildings, homes and sites to chronicle the passage of the eras.  A couple of these examples include the Pruyn House and the first Shaker Meeting House.  Visitors can take a walking tour of the city historical value or ride one of its many trolleys or Aqua Ducks with a guie to describe the city's educational and historical sites.

For the horse enthusiasts, there is a thoroughbred racetrak at Saratoga.
