Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)

Boston Logan Airport is officially known as the General Edward Lawrence Logan international Airport and is rich in history.  Originally named Boston Airport, it was founded on September 8, 1923.  US Army air service officer first Lieutenant Donald Duke of the Army Air Corps was Boston Airport's first general manager and he is credited with coining the term "airport."

BOS is located in Boston, Massachusetts and covers 2,384 acres, has six runways and employs an estimated 16,000 workers. It is the 19th busiest airport in the U.S. with about 13.5 million boardings a year. The airport serves as a focus city for JetBlue Airways as well as a hub for Cape Air, PenAir, Delta Air Lines and US Airways amongst many more. Several movies have also been filmed at Logan Airport.

There are newstands in each terminal that sell a variety of souvenirs and travelling necessities. There are over thirty eateries available from award-winning restaurants to a quick grab-and-go.

Art exhibits, children's play areas and Logan's spa make waiting at the airport a more positive experience. There is also the 9/11 Memorial and Our Lady of the Airways, a non-denominational chapel where travelers and the airport community often go to reflect and pray.

Transportation

There are variety of options to and from the airport. These options include cars, taxis, the MBTA Blue and Silver lines, regional bus services, shared ride vans, limousines and Logan Express. Logan is 3 miles northeast of downtown Boston, which is a relatively short distance compared to other city airports.

By public roads, the airport is accessible via Exit 26 of Interstate 90. Massport's Airport Shuttle also provides service between all terminals to the airport station on the Blue Line. A recently established 120,000 sq. ft. rental car center consolidates all rental car companies into one shared facility.

Hotel

Both Hilton and Hyatt operate hotels on airport grounds near Terminal A, with Hyatt overlooking downtown Boston and Boston Harbor.



City Information

Shawmut (later to become Boston Massachusettes), was named by the first English immigrant Rev. William Blackstone.  Arriving by himself in 1629, he settled on a small peninsula that was named Shawmut by the local Algonquins. John Winthrop came along with Puritan settlers and decided to make Shawmet a permanent settlement on September 17, 1630. He renamed the settlement Boston, after his hometown in Lincolnshire England.

Early in its history,  Boston emerged as an educational center with the founding of Harvard University and the Boston Latin School. Along with its harbor Boston became a leading commercial center for the colonies.  Along with becoming a world leader of shipbuilding, it was also the primary port of North America

As tensions grew between the Colonies and Britain, Bostonians took a leadership role in the Revolution.  Boston was the scene of the Stamp Act of 1765, The Townshend Acts of 1767, which led to the Boston Master in 1770. It was also the scene of the Tea Act of 1773 which led to the Boston Tea Party.  British troops were sent to Lexington and Concorde to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock on the night of April 18, 1775, which led to Paul Revere and William Dawes to ride through the town to warn the colonists of the soldiers' arrival. The next day on Lexington Green quote the shot heard round the world quote was fired and the American revolution started. A couple months later, George Washington was brought to Boston to take command of the colonial army.

Boston prides itself on being the first in several innovative ideas throughout his long and rich history.  Boston Common became the first public park in America in 1634. The first public secondary school, Boston Latin School, was established in 1635. It is still in operation. The first United States mail route was opened between Boston and New York in 1672.  the oldest restaurant in America was established in 1714. The Union Oyster House is still in operation under the same name today.

Always a leader in government, in 1780 the first state Constitution was created in Boston.  In 1784 the Bell in Hand Tavern opened.  today it is the country's oldest pub.  Boston was the first city to establish its own police department in 1838, in 1903 first modern World Series is played in Major E Baseball. The Boston Americans eat the Pittsburgh Pirates five games to three in the best of nine series.  Harvard professor Howard Aiken develop the automatic sequence controlled calculator also known as the first automatic digital computer.
