Fighting the Boston traffic to Logan International Airport isn’t exactly easy during the best of times and the closure of the Callahan Tunnel hasn’t made things any simpler.

A popular route to the airport, the tunnel shut down on Dec. 27 and it’s expected to remain closed until mid-March of 2014.

Opened in 1961, Callahan Tunnel funnels an average of 30,000 cars a day under Boston Harbor, but the infrastructure is crumbling. The curbing, gutters, deck and wall panels are all in need of extensive renovation. MassDOT, anticipating a fair amount of struggle and strife, announced the closure a full six months in advance to give commuters time to adjust and prepare.

Detours around the closed tunnel include the Ted Williams Tunnel, around Route 16 east to Route 1A south or over the Tobin bridge.

During afternoon rush hours, State Police will direct eastbound turnpike traffic into a left hand turn lane near Exit 25. This will allow traffic from the Seaport District elite admission to the right lane and help with merging difficulties.

Other experiments are in place, including a fast track lane on I-93 opening an hour earlier than normal.
